Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative medicine is a cutting edge and emerging technique that is centered around replacing or re-growing lost tissue or replacing abnormal cells so that the body can re-establish normal function. Typically, we derive “stem cells” from one’s own body through a high specialized and safe process. These cells are then injected back into the patient, location depending on the disease process in question. Stem cell therapy can be used to treat joint arthritis, both large joints like the hip and knees but also smaller joints like your wrist and ankles. We can also inject stem cells near the spine to treat spinal arthritis and/or heal intervertebral disc tears. One of the more common stem cell therapies is termed PRP or platelet rich plasma. A simple blood draw from a patient is processed through a special machine to yield concentrated platelet rich plasma. Using either ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance, these cells are then injected back into the patient and help with healing of injured ligaments, joint cartilage, tendons or muscles.
