What is Pain Management?
Pain management is the use of a multidisciplinary approach to help alleviate the burden of chronic pain. It involves careful examination and diagnosis to help identify the source of pain. After a diagnosis has been made, a treatment plan is tailored to your specific needs. It can include lifestyle modifications, home exercise programs, smoking cessation, weight loss counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy, medication management, minimally invasive surgical procedures and/or injections. Your doctor will closely monitor your progress and modify the treatments to maximize relief and improve quality of life.
What to Expect From Your San Marcos Pain Management Specialist
Your pain management specialist will help you manage and treat any acute or chronic pain complaints that can arise from overuse, physical activity, trauma, surgery, motor vehicle collisions etc. They will perform a thorough history and physical examination and recommend additional diagnostic testing like X-rays, CT and/or MRI to identify the source of your pain. They will make recommendations based on their evaluation to help manage and definitively treat your pain. This may include medication management such as nsaids, muscle relaxants, nerve medications, and in some cases opioid medications.
In addition your pain doctor will recommend a home exercise program, physical therapy and/or chiropractic treatments. Based on your diagnosis, they will offer minimally invasive surgical options and injections to permanently alleviate your pain. Additionally, they will help coordinate your care with other specialists such as joint surgeons or spine surgeons if the need arises.
